History Through Art & Music - High School - Carly O'Quinn

Prerequisites: none

From cave paintings, Hieroglyphs, and sarcophagi to a portrayal of a Spanish rebellion, and a French Queen’s coronation; there is a lot to be learned from snapshots of art and music. These important pieces were either created as a record of historical moments in real-time or as creative retrospective inspirations of important time periods and events.

Listen to the compositions that emerged from the royal courts of monarchs to learn about the importance of the aristocracy’s status to entertain during the Baroque period. Romantic painters like John Constable and composers such as Greig and Verdi gave us chiaroscuro (the light in contrast with the dark) of the upper class as well as the daily life of the working middle class. Study the works of Impressionist painters like Monet and Seurat while listening to Debussy and Ravel to have a better sensorial understanding of the impressionist movement happening in and around Paris at the turn of the 20th century. Visit the compositions that sparked outrage from Stalin during World War II and almost cost Prokofiev his life!

This class will have a heavy focus on art and music history but will engage important moments as we travel chronologically through various time periods. Class time will involve discussions about the influences of rulers, society, economics, political conflicts, and geography on these artists’ and composers’ works. Expected time outside of class each week: 2 hours. (1 Fine Arts, 0.5 World History credits)

No textbook will be needed. All reading, visual and audio materials will be sent along with the homework via Google Classroom. Some homework will be digital assignments and listening activities, while others will be the standard worksheet style. You must have a printer to be able to print out some homework assignments. Students should have a binder for handouts and a notebook or notebook paper for notes during class.
