SAT and ACT Strategies for Success - Fall Semester - Deb Evans

SAT and ACT Strategies for Success

Deb Evans

One and one-half hours x 14 weeks

This one-semester class will prepare your child for the SAT and/or ACT by focusing on the test strategies needed for success. The trick to the SAT and ACT is that you CAN’T treat it like any other test! They don’t test how smart you are or how much you’ve learned in school – they simply test how well you can take the test. Even if you’ve never taken a standardized test before, you will be ready after taking this class.

We will focus primarily on strategies, but we will also touch on some of the primary skills you need to know. Students will take practice tests on their own and through guided practice with the instructor Deb Evans. Ms. Deb has been teaching SAT and ACT Prep for over six years. Her strength is the Reading and Writing sections, but this class will include Math strategies as well.

Who is this class for? Sophomores and Juniors who will be taking the SAT and/or ACT. This class will prepare you for testing beginning December 2019.

What you will learn:

  • A guessing strategy that works (when all else fails)
  • The top 10 grammar skills tested and how to master them
  • The clue to answering the grammar questions by identifying the skill being tested first
  • The secret to writing a winning essay
  • The best reading strategy to get through the passages quickly so you can focus on the questions (most students spend more time on reading the passages and less time on the questions – this is exactly backward!)
  • The main types of reading passage questions and how to determine the correct answer by determining the question type
  • Why it’s more important to identify the wrong answers than it is to find the right answers. Plus, you’ll learn the traits that all correct answers share and the clues to discovering the wrong answer traps!
  • The most important thing to do when taking practice tests (it’s not answering the questions!), and much more!

Success stories from students who’ve completed private SAT/ACT tutoring with Deb Evans:

  • from Chris W., now playing football for Dartmouth…“Thank you for your help! I got a perfect 800 on SAT Reading (who wouldn’t be happy with that?) Full score was 2190.” Chris W
  • Another perfect 800 on SAT Critical Reading – this time from Kaitlyn Z! She was accepted by multiple Ivy League Universities and chose Rice University in Houston.
  • Kyle raised his SAT Reading Score from 570 to 680! He raised his Writing score from 450 to 580!
  • from Mitchell’s mom…”We came home to an acceptance letter to A&M!  I am soooooooooo excited! He also received an $18,000 scholarship from U of H!  We still want A&M.  Thank you so much Deb.  He could NOT have done it without you.” Rachelle B. (I also worked with this student on his application essays.)
  • Olivia B. raised her ACT Reading Score from 16 to 21 and Science from 17 to 24!

This class is geared towards college bound students preparing for the SAT and ACT, but it will help any student improve his or her grammar skills.
