Geography – Grades 9th–12th - Brenda Hall

Expected time outside of class each week needed for preparation and homework will average between 5 – 6 hours.

Geography is a high school course which counts as one credit of history. It is a foundational class so that students can form a mental map of the world, understand cultures and population centers, and appreciate how God formed the world with oceans, land, rivers, mountains, deserts, etc. Upon completing geography, students will be able to complete American and World History with a greater understanding of the physical world.

During the first semester, students will have an introduction to longitude and latitude, study the history of map making, and learn about early explorers. The geography of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, along with Central America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica will be studied. Missionary emphasis will include: Tom White in Cuba and Nate Saint in Ecuador. Students will be required to make a presentation on one geographical feature in the Western Hemisphere at the end of the semester.

After Christmas, we will sweep through Europe and Africa for 4 weeks each. Topics such as the Lake Turnover Disaster in Cameroon and the Great Rift Valley will be presented. The last 6 weeks will cover the Middle East and Asia. Students will understand the major maritime chokepoints, the biomes of Russia, the great rivers of China, and the harsh winters of Mongolia. The missionary emphasis this semester will be on David Livingstone in Africa and Gladys Aylward in China. We will end the semester with students bringing food from their favorite country to share for our end-of-year party.
